The Joy Luck Club

4 Stars

Well, sometimes those people who decide which books become classics actually get it right. This book gives the story of 2 generations of Japanese women–one generation was born in Japan and immigrated to the US, while the other was born on US soil and had to deal with being stuck between two cultures. The author had such skill, that each story showed the best of the woman it was about while getting her prejudices and personal preferences across. I found I loved the woman the story was about while hating all the people she hated. Then the story would switch to one of the hated women, and I fell in love with them. Nicely done, author, nicely done!
